While living in
northern England years ago, I learned the pre-Roman name for the region
was Brigantes, taken from the Celtic goddess Brigantia. She was also
known as Brigid in Ireland. Today it is retained as the name of an
iron-age re-enactment group, an arts association and several Druid
groups. The name simply means High One, or Exalted One, and is associated
with the life giving and fluid nature of water, with healing and
prosperity, and strangely, with war.
